The Lovers

Like other cards, the Lovers card can have both literal and symbolic meanings. Literally, this card represents love, romance, and relationships. The presence of the two trees represents the two trees in the Garden of Eden, The Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. Around the Tree of Knowledge there is a Snake representing the temptation to use knowledge for personal gain. We must strive to use our knowledge to unite, and never to divide. However, the Lovers card also carries a deeper significance as it signifies making choices. These choices may involve matters of the heart, such as deciding between two lovers or determining whether to continue or end a relationship. The kitties in the card remind me of the symbol for the yin and the yang reminding us to listen and support the ebb and flow of a relationship. Additionally, the card can also represent reaching a critical point in one's career or any situation where a decision must be made. Often, these choices are challenging because there is no clear option available, yet a decision must still be made.

Reversed or with challenging cards around the Lovers, this could indicate infidelity or it could indicate that you are facing the consequences of choices made in the past. In a situation where you are unhappy in a relationship, a job or any situation you are in, it could indicate that there isn’t the right amount of give and take.
